In the mid-sixteenth century, New Year’s Day was celebrated from the 25th March to the 1st of April. With the introduction of the new Gregorian calendar, the celebration was moved to the 1st of January.
A mediados del siglo XVI, el año nuevo se celebraba desde el 25 de marzo hasta el 1 de abril. Con la instauración del nuevo calendario gregoriano, la celebración se desplazó al 1 de enero.
It is said that many people were slow to adapt to the new dates and continued to celebrate the New Year between the 25th of March and the 1st of April, and were considered the «Fools of April» for this reason. The absent-minded were victims of jokes, teasing and invitations to fictitious parties to ridicule them, and so the tradition of playing tricks on the 1st of April began.
Al parecer, mucha gente tardó en adaptarse a las nuevas fechas y continuaron celebrando el año nuevo entre el 25 de marzo y el 1 de abril, y se les consideraba los “tontos de abril” por ello. Los despistados fueron víctimas de bromas, burlas e invitaciones a fiestas ficticias para ridiculizarlos y así nació la tradición de hacer bromas el 1 de abril.
The victim of the jokes began to be called an April fish as it was related to the zodiac, because on that date the sun was leaving the constellation of Pisces.
La víctima de las burlas comenzó a llamarse pez o pescado de abril y al parecer está relacionado con el zodíaco, ya que en esa fecha el sol abandonaba la constelación de Piscis.
It became popular to hang a piece of paper shaped like a fish on someone’s back as part of a joke.
Se hizo popular la práctica de colgar un trozo de papel con forma de pescado en la espalda de alguien como sinónimo de broma.
For a couple of decades now, several brands have included a good part of their budget in playing pranks on the 1st of April, including Google. This year, with the coronavirus pandemic raging the planet, they’ve decided not to do that kind of campaign out of respect for all those who are fighting the Covid-19.
Desde hace un par de décadas, varias marcas incluyen buena parte de su presupuesto en hacer bromas el 1 de abril, entre ellas Google.
