February 14th is Valentine’s Day, Lovers’ Day or Friendship Day. Each place has adopted different names, but what is the origin of this celebration?
El 14 de febrero se celebra el Día de San Valentín, Día de los enamorados o Día del amor y la amistad, en cada lugar ha adoptado diferentes nombres, pero ¿cuál es el origen de esta celebración?
According to tradition, this festivity, which has been accepted by the Catholic Church, dates back to the first centuries in Rome, where a priest named Valentine married the soldiers with their maidens challenging the order of Emperor Claudius II which prohibited professional soldiers from marrying because he considered that single people without a family were better soldiers, without ties or sentimental burdens.
Según la tradición, esta festividad, asimilada por la Iglesia Católica, se remonta a los primeros siglos en Roma, donde un sacerdote llamado Valentín casaba a los soldados con sus doncellas desafiando la orden del emperador Claudio II que prohibía el matrimonio a los soldados profesionales ya que consideraba que los solteros sin familia eran mejores soldados, sin ataduras y ni cargas sentimentales.
Valentin risked his life to unite couples in marriage. When the emperor found out, he had him beheaded.
That’s why Valentine is the patron saint of lovers.
