Los incendios en Australia
Australia is experiencing its worst nightmare in living memory. Bushfires have reached unprecedented levels; 28 people have lost their lives, several of them firefighters, 1,588 houses have been destroyed, more than 10 million hectares have been destroyed and an estimated 1 billion animals have died.
Australia vive su peor pesadilla desde que se tenga memoria. Los incendios han alcanzado niveles nunca vividos: 28 personas han perdido la vida, varios de ellos bomberos, 1.588 casas destruidas, más de 10 millones de hectáreas arrasadas y se estima que unos 1.000 millones de animales muertos.
While fires are frequent in Australia at this time of year, on this occasion they have been devastating. There are several reasons for this. An extreme heatwave, a prolonged drought and strong winds feed the fire and firefighters are finding it nearly impossible to keep them under control.
Si bien son frecuentes los incendios en Australia en esta época del año, esta vez están siendo realmente devastadores. Esto se debe a varias razones. Una ola de calor extremo, una sequía prolongada y fuertes vientos alimentan el fuego y no permiten combatirlo.
The rainfall in South Australia in recent days have given the firefighters a break from months of extreme working conditions having been fighting the fires for months, but although at first glance it seems like very good news, it is not so good considering that the sediment that flows into the sea has toxins that could seriously damage marine biodiversity.
Las lluvias que han caído en el sur de Australia estos últimos días, han dado un respiro a los cuerpos de bomberos que llevan luchando desde hace meses contra los incendios, pero aunque a priori parece una muy buena noticia, no lo es tanto teniendo en cuenta que los sedimentos que fluyen hacia el mar tendrán toxinas que podrían perjudicar seriamente la biodiversidad marina.
It is time to become aware that these extreme phenomena are closely related to climate change and that each one of us is responsible for taking care of the planet with small actions. Don’t throw waste on the beaches, nor in the sea, recycle the plastic, paper and glass… Every little thing action counts.
Es momento de tomar conciencia de que estos fenómenos tan extremos están muy relacionados con el cambio climático y que cada uno de nosotros es responsable de cuidar el planeta con pequeños gestos. No tires residuos en las playas, ni en el mar, recicla el plástico, papel y cristal… Todo suma y todo resta.
